EduAI Gender and Privacy Toolkit: Advancing Inclusive and Responsible AI Through Practical Guidance

Before the establishment of the Nigeria AI Research Lab (NAIL) at the University of Lagos, our team operated as EduAI Lab, where we led pioneering research and capacity-building initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, ethics and public policy.

As EduAI Lab evolved into NAIL with an expanded mandate, stronger partnerships and increased funding, we continued building on the same commitment to developing AI that is responsible, inclusive and beneficial to society.

One of the landmark outputs from the EduAI Lab era is the EduAI Gender and Privacy Toolkit.

The toolkit was developed to help researchers, educators, policymakers, technology developers and other stakeholders better understand and address the gender and privacy implications of AI systems. It provides practical guidance, frameworks and recommendations for designing, deploying and governing AI technologies in ways that protect privacy while promoting gender equity and inclusion.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, healthcare, finance, governance and everyday life, questions around fairness, data protection and inclusion are becoming more important than ever. This toolkit contributes to those conversations by offering actionable insights that support ethical AI development and responsible innovation.

Although originally produced under the EduAI Lab identity, the toolkit remains part of the growing body of knowledge and research that now forms the foundation of the Nigeria AI Research Lab (NAIL). It reflects our enduring mission to ensure that AI serves everyone fairly, responsibly and sustainably.

Building Foundational Language Models for Yoruba and Hausa

Develops AI models capable of understanding and translating Yoruba and Hausa languages, two of Africa’s most widely spoken languages, for educational use. The project creates open, high-quality datasets and foundational language models that enhance access to learning materials in local languages, making education more inclusive for low-resource language communities.
